The Winds of April
April dawns glorious and blue. The breezes blow but they are the winds of April, softer and gentler, they can no longer overpower the warmth of the Spring’s sunshine.
The first crocus blooms and I remember that every first flower is a gift and I am not left ungrateful, but even more thrilling is the first bumblebee, he flies in the warm afternoon sun, yellow and black, fat and fuzzy. And he makes me so glad to be alive on this day, this month, this earth!
The birds serenade the woods throughout the day and my hillside is a most beautiful aviary, while I am meandering within the forest how often the words of Clarence Hawkes float through my mind…
“My aviary is the good green wood,
I would not cage its songsters if I could,
Sweeter the song of one wild bird to me,
Then all the notes in sad captivity”
A Bald Eagle flies high over the summit, circling and calling, his high pitched voice filters down and I am grateful that humanity corrected their ways and his come back and survival allows him to reign supreme once again.
We search for fiddleheads and wild garlic, it takes us to obscure and unknown places each one as lovely as the last. We find old cart roads that wander through uninhabited forests, mile after mile just woods, small streams, the first of the wild flowers, Spring peepers and Barred Owl couples that sit motionless at the edge of small ponds.
We find a secluded waterfall and it’s as if we have entered a fairyland of stone stairways and giant moss covered boulders, the lush green is vibrant in the moist April air, water tumbling and falling, settling into small pools. The giant slabs of granite appear to be the source of this enchanted oasis and I don’t want to look past the boulders to find a stream higher up, I want to imagine this is like the Rock of Horeb.
We sit on the edge of the Catskills, and although its mid April it had snowed the day before, the ground was white but it was a Spring snow, soft and melty, the mountains and valleys in between are awe inspiring. We watch a small murder of crows fly overhead, they circle and wheel, calling out to each other, to the west a falcon arises, flying over the valley, he is glorious until he suddenly pulls in his wings and his true power and speed and magnificence are shown in his stoop as he is rocketing through the skies and we were blessed to be a part of it.
And April passes glorious and true.
