New England Grace

As the Autumnal forest loses its foliage it has an open feel to it, sunlight filters in through the remaining golden leaves of the Beech, Birch and Maples, making the early, slanting light even more ethereal. Sunlight filtered through gold...

Blue Jays, woodpeckers, crows, and wild turkeys have lost feathers here and there along my path, I leave them in case another also wanders these wooded hills, they too, can know that Angels watch over them, just as they watch over me.

The deer don their Winter coats, losing the deep, red brown of Summer, their fur becomes thicker, more drab gray. The camouflaging works, for if she had not made the slight movement of her head I might have passed her by being none the wiser, but with a twitch of her ears and white flag of a tail she leapt with grace into the deeper wood.

On a mossy old tree stump a squirrel has dined on acorns, he leaves the upturned caps, they shine golden in the late afternoon sun. I let my imagination take over from reality: they are no longer acorn caps but beautiful golden cups left over from a wood nymphs' morning tea party and for the remainder of my hike I let my mind meander along the path of impossibilities that only exist in the lovely realm of the unseen. And along the way I find all the makings for a hidden world of miniature enchantments; my forested sanctuary reveals a thousand gifts for me to behold.

If one could stop the hands of time and eternally hold a day, surely it would be an October afternoon.

The beauty is overwhelming, there's a tightening in my chest and throat, I feel as if I am suffocating, but if one must die, why not die from an overdose of beauty? That would be the most glorious way to leave the good Earth, but just as it does every October my heart sings out ~ "Heaven can wait..."

To be alive in a New England October is surely the fulfillment of all the promises of the previous months. It is glorious and beautiful. Here. There. Everywhere. The very air is beautiful. The forests, the fields, the misty valleys between the orange, russet, and golden hills. The rivers appear like liquid pewter running ever onward to the sea, the ponds sit silent with the inky black water reflecting the beauty all around them and therefore doubling the glory of the day.

Eliot so beautiful penned: “Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns." I feel as if I too, would love to give up traditional life and become a vagabond, and go about seeking the next Autumnal forest trail; but alas, I remember how much I adore electricity, hot showers, and a cup of tea at a moment’s notice so I abandon that dream. I am content and ever so grateful that I have lived in New England through 50 Autumns, as surely no matter how lovely they may be elsewhere, they can not compare to the beauty and grace of New England.

Happy October!

Sunlit green meadow and forest overlook misty layered hills under a pale cloudy sky, serene morning landscape.

Wishing you a beautiful and blessed month of October!
